A New Era of Excellence at Colby Colby’s new 350,000-square-foot athletics center, opening in the fall of 2020, will offer state-of-the-art facilities, including expansive fitness, recreational training, and competition spaces, and more than 100,000 square feet of new athletic fields to support the wellness of the entire community and provide an ideal spectator experience.
Aquatic Center The aquatic center will feature the only 50-meter pool in Maine and the Northeast’s only Myrtha pool, the standard for international competition.
Boulos Family Fitness Center At 14,000 square feet, the new Boulos Family Fitness Center will be the largest exercise facility in the conference. It is designed to support peak performance of Colby athletes and enhanced health and wellness in the Colby community with a mix of equipment for cardio, stretching, strength training, and more on three interconnected levels with visibility to and from campus.
Courtyard and Recreational Spaces An exterior courtyard for community gathering in the center of the building brings natural light into the building. Spaces devoted to supporting healthy lifestyles, such as fitness and dance studios, a yoga studio, and meditation areas, are among the features of the new athletics center.
Gymnasium The new arena will enhance the training and competition experience for basketball and volleyball players and will be named for Trustee Jim Crook ’78, P’11, a former basketball player, and Andrea Crook P’11. The main basketball court will continue to honor the legacy of legendary basketball coaches Dick Whitmore and John “Swisher” Mitchell.
Ice Arena The new ice arena will be visible from the ground level of the building and enhance the spectator experience, including at highly popular rivalry games. Colby’s original Alfond Ice Rink, constructed in 1955, was the site of the first women’s intercollegiate hockey match, against Brown.
Indoor Competition Center The new indoor track and competition center will feature a 200-meter indoor track, a climbing wall, and infield to serve as a multi-sport indoor practice space for tennis and lacrosse..
Athletic Fields More than 100,000 square feet of natural grass surfaces for multiple uses, including recreation and wellness activities, will adjoin the new athletics center. Nearby slopes will offer spectator seating and leisure space.
Squash Courts The facility’s nine centrally located squash courts will enhance Colby’s ability to host home matches and tournaments.
