Tennessee baseball earns No. 3 national seed in NCAA Tournament, learns regional opponents

Tennessee baseball is the No. 3 national seed in the NCAA Tournament, the NCAA announced Monday.

The Vols (45-16) open against Wright State (35-11) in the Knoxville Regional on Friday (6 p.m. ET, ESPN3). Duke (32-20) and Liberty (39-14) are on the opposite side of the bracket.

UT’s regional is paired with the Eugene Regional, which is hosted by No. 14 national seed Oregon. The winners of the two regionals will face in the super regional round.

UT has not advanced to a super regional since 2005, when it reached the College World Series.

UT was announced as one of 16 NCAA Tournament regional hosts Sunday night. The Vols had not hosted a regional since 2005, when they reached the College World Series.

Regionals will take place June 4-7. Super regionals are slated for June 11-14. The College World Series at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Nebraska, starts June 19.

Super regional host sites will not be announced until after the regionals. UT has submitted to host a super regional. Selected sites for super regionals will remain even if the host school does not advance past the regional round.

Sites were predetermined this year so host schools will have time to prepare for COVID-19 protocols, such as testing locations for players and coaches.
